Tosa Maidan Travel Guide – Budgam’s High MeadowDuke Kashmir Travels
Tosa Maidan is a high meadow in Budgam district, Kashmir, India. It lies about 70 km from Srinagar on the Pir Panjal slope and was for centuries a route across the range to Poonch.
There is no development here at all — no hotels, no market, no ticket office. Visitors come for the grass, the trees and the silence.

Key takeaways
- Distance: about 70 km from Srinagar via Khag, roughly two and a half hours.
- What it is: an open meadow on the Pir Panjal slope, ringed by deodar.
- Best time: May to September, when the meadow is green and the track passable.
- Time needed: a full day trip from Srinagar.
- Facilities: none. Carry food, water and warm layers.
What is Tosa Maidan like?
Open grassland at the treeline, with deodar forest on every side. Streams cross the meadow and wildflowers come through in early summer. Shepherd families move up here for the season with their flocks, which is the only regular human presence.
Historically the meadow was the approach to the Poonch route over the Pir Panjal, one of the old passes between the valley and the plains.
How do you get to Tosa Maidan?
About 70 km from Srinagar through Budgam and Khag, then a rough track to the meadow. The last stretch needs a suitable vehicle and settled weather; in rain the track is poor. Plan a full day and start early.
The other Budgam meadows — Doodh Pathri and Yousmarg — are easier to reach if you have only half a day.

Insider tip from our local team
Ask about the track before you commit to Tosa Maidan. The last stretch from Khag is unpaved and turns difficult after rain, and there is no recovery service if a vehicle gets stuck. Go in settled weather, start early, and carry everything you need for the day.
