What are the Naranag temples?

A group of stone temples beside the Wangath river dating from around the 8th century, built in massive undressed blocks. They stand in two clusters and are among the oldest surviving structures in the valley.

How far is Naranag from Srinagar?

About 50 km, roughly an hour and a half. You drive the Sonmarg highway to Kangan and turn up a side road for the last 8 km.

How hard is the Gangabal trek from Naranag?

It gains about 1,300 m and takes six to eight hours up for a fit walker, so it is done as an overnight with a camp at the lake. The season is late May to September; guides and ponies are arranged locally or through us.

Can you visit Naranag and Sonmarg the same day?

Yes. The Naranag turn is at Kangan, on the road to Sonmarg, so an early start covers the temples in the morning and Sonmarg in the afternoon.

Is there accommodation at Naranag?

Very little. It is a village with basic guesthouses and camping for trekkers rather than a hotel town. Most visitors stay in Srinagar or Sonmarg and come out for the day.
