Aharbal Waterfall drops about 25 metres through a rock gorge in Kulgam district, 67 kilometres from Srinagar, in forest below the Pir Panjal range. Locals call it the Niagara of Kashmir, which oversells the height and undersells the noise. It is loud, cold and set in deep pine and fir, and the hill station around it stays quiet.

What is there at Aharbal?
The waterfall itself, viewing points above and below it, and forest walks running further up the valley towards Kungwattan and Mahinag.
The river drops through a narrow rock gorge, which is what gives the fall its volume of sound. Paths and steps lead down towards the pool and up through the pines; sensible shoes help, because the rock stays wet.
When should you visit?
April to October. Snowmelt makes the fall heaviest in late spring, and autumn brings the clearest air.
Winter visits are possible when the road is clear, and the surrounding forest under snow is worth the drive, but the paths are slippery and daylight is short.
How do you get there?
From Srinagar via Shopian or Kulgam, about 67 kilometres and two hours by road.
