Baba Reshi Shrine stands below Gulmarg in Baramulla district and honours Baba Payam-ud-Din Reshi, the Sufi who died there in 1480. It is a three-storeyed timber building on the road up to the meadow, and people of every faith stop at it. The Urs each year fills the whole hillside.

Who was Baba Reshi?
Baba Payam-ud-Din Reshi, a Sufi of the Rishi tradition who withdrew to this hillside and died here in 1480. His followers built the shrine in his memory.
The Rishi order is distinctively Kashmiri, drawing on both Sufi and older local ascetic practice, and its shrines are found across the valley. This is one of the best known.

Timber shrines like this are the Kashmiri norm and are repeatedly repaired rather than replaced. Remove your shoes at the threshold, dress modestly and expect separate areas for men and women.
When is it busiest?
During the Urs, the yearly commemoration, when devotees come from across Kashmir. Ordinary days are quiet.
