Drang Duke Kashmir Travels

Drang

Drang is a village 3 kilometres from Tangmarg on the Gulmarg road, set on the Ferozpur Nallah, a fast mountain stream in the northern Kashmir valley. It is about 40 km from Srinagar and works as a stop rather than a destination: water, pine, a few tea stalls, and in deep winter a frozen waterfall that has made the place well known.

Duke Kashmir Travels has run the Gulmarg road from Srinagar since 2011, under Department of Tourism registration JKTA00003978. Kashmir packages start around ₹6,350 per person, two to a room.

Key takeaways

  • Three kilometres from Tangmarg, roughly 40 km from Srinagar.
  • The Ferozpur Nallah runs fast here in summer and freezes in winter.
  • Locals fish the stream; trout are the draw.
  • A short walk brings you to the waterfall above the village.
  • It suits a half-hour halt on the way to or from Gulmarg.
  • Snow closes the upper track in the coldest weeks.

What is there at Drang?

A mountain stream running through pine and rock, a waterfall a short walk above the road, and space to sit by the water.

Visitors compare it to Pahalgam on a smaller scale, and the comparison is fair: the appeal is the same combination of clear water, stone and forest. In deep winter the fall freezes and the site becomes a photograph everyone in the valley recognises.

Can you fish there?

Yes, the Ferozpur Nallah holds trout and local anglers work it through the season.

Fishing in Kashmir's trout streams is licensed by the fisheries department, and permits are issued by beat. Ask well before your dates if you want a rod day rather than a look at the water.

When should you stop?

Any month you are driving to Gulmarg. Summer for the stream, January and February for the frozen fall.

It costs half an hour on a Gulmarg day. Baba Reshi Shrine is on the same stretch of road. The tour ideas page shows how the day usually runs.
