How is Nigeen different from Dal Lake?
Smaller, deeper, quieter, and lined with trees rather than hotels. It is joined to Dal but sits far enough west to feel like its own lake.
Dal is the sightseeing lake, with the ghats, the vendors and the floating market. Nigeen is where people go to sit still. If your idea of a houseboat night involves reading on the deck rather than a stream of passing shikaras, this is the water to choose.
Is a houseboat on Nigeen a good idea?
Yes, for quiet. The moorings are spaced out and the outlook is trees and hills rather than road and traffic.
The trade-off is distance: you are a few minutes further from the Boulevard restaurants and the old city. We book only boats we have inspected, and most guests take one night here before moving to a hotel.
When is Nigeen at its best?
May to October for the water and the trees; autumn is exceptional when the poplars turn.
Winter is very still and very cold, and some boats close for the season. Spring brings the willows back and the lake fills after snowmelt.

Dal Lake is through the channel, Hazratbal a short drive east, and the Hari Parbat fort rises behind the western bank.
