Pahalgam is a valley town on the Lidder river in south Kashmir, India. It sits 90 km from Srinagar at about 2,740 m (9,000 ft), and it is the base for the Betaab, Aru and Baisaran valleys and the Amarnath pilgrimage route.
It is also where the Amarnath pilgrimage road begins, and where the Lidder is rafted from April to October. Two and a half hours from Srinagar makes it a long day trip; most itineraries give it a night.

The golf course beside the river is open from spring to autumn, and the Lidder carries river rafting from April to October.
Do you need a local taxi in Pahalgam?
Yes, for the side valleys, and this catches most first-time visitors out. Your vehicle from Srinagar brings you to the Pahalgam taxi stand and waits there. Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari are covered by local union taxis, usually sold as one circuit of the three.
It is a long-standing local arrangement rather than a charge invented for tourists. Rates are set by the union and revised each season, so we do not fold them into the package price. Ask before you travel and we will tell you the current rate for the circuit.
When is the best time to visit Pahalgam?
May and June for the meadows, October for the colour, January for snow. Pahalgam sits lower than Gulmarg and stays green later into autumn. July and August bring the Amarnath yatra, when the town is busy and the Chandanwari road carries pilgrim traffic.
How do you get to Pahalgam from Srinagar?
90 km south through Anantnag, about two and a half hours. The road runs past the saffron fields of Pampore and the apple orchards of south Kashmir, and is open all year. It is the longest of the three standard hill-station drives, so avoid it on the day you fly out.
From Pahalgam you can continue to Kokernag, Achabal and Verinag, which sit on the same side of the valley.

Book the union taxi circuit at the Pahalgam stand for the morning, not after lunch: Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari all face east, so the light is better early and the ponies at Aru are fresher. Baisaran is best walked before breakfast from the town, which takes about 45 minutes uphill and costs nothing.
